Hairspray is a 2007 musical film based on a Broadway musical, set in 1960s Baltimore, Maryland. It follows the "pleasantly plump" teenager Tracy Turnblad as she pursues stardom as a dancer on a local TV show and rallies against racial segregation. Both the film and the musical are based on the 1988 film of the same name by John Waters .

One night, she and her best friend Penny Pingleton sneak out to a record hop emceed by the show's host Corny Collins. Though the event is segregated, she impresses guest judge Motormouth Maybelle Stubbs, who co-hosts the program's "Negro Day", which occurs on the last Thursday of every month.

Link joins with Tracy and the black kids and plan to get into the Corny Collins Show. Link was seen escorting Tracy on stage as he and she performs "You Can't Stop The Beat" as Penny.

In the detention hall, an African-American boy named Seaweed teaches Tracy some dance moves. Soon afterwards, Corny Collins is the guest DJ at the school's sophomore hop ("The Madison"). Corny and Link are immediately impressed by Tracy's dance moves.
